Have this easy homemade elderberry syrup recipe in your back pocket for the next time a cold comes along! This recipe is made with whole ingredients, most of which will already be sitting in your pantry. Sweetened with raw honey and great for digestion as well!

We never think about cold medicine until we need it. I found myself sick as a dog sometimes and needing to hit the store. Not anymore, not with this Easy Homemade Elderberry Syrup Recipe. This stuff goes a long way and can keep for quite some time! Like Bone broth, I love adding this recipe into my simple and natural lifestyle routine.
So it’s a great staple to have on deck for the height of flu and cold season. Plus you can feel confident that your are getting a product with the best ingredients because when we are sick we need as much working in our favor as possible.
And it’s a great addition to incorporate into a family’s daily routine. After breakfast we will have a teaspoon of elderberry syrup.
Have a picky toddler that will not take “medicine” – this stuff is so tasty they will be lining up at the fridge to take a sip!
You can play with what ingredients work best for you and your family but the main ingredients that every quality syrup should have is elderberries, water and honey. The rest I alternate here and there depending on what I have in my pantry. If you do not have everything on the list, don’t worry it will still work and be better than nothing 🙂
One time I accidentally grabbed turmeric instead of ginger root at the market and it turned out just fine!

How Long does Elderberry Syrup Last?
Elderberry Syrup can last for years if you store it correctly! If you’re not using alcohol it must be stored in the fridge. If you do use alcohol, it’s okay to store in a cool dark cabinet. To ensure longevity of your syrup, use a new spoon each time you dip to take a teaspoon. Especially if you are sick you do not want to contaminate your lovely jar of syrup!
Tips for making Elderberry Syrup
- Remember to add the honey AFTER the syrup cools down. This will give you the most benefits from your lovely honey!
- Make sure to not over simmer, this will reduce its effectivness
- If you are using wooden spoons to stir, they may get stained. I don’t mind though I feel it gives my spoons character
- Save you berries after you strain! You can dry them out and use for tea or freeze for smoothies. Drying usually takes a week so if you cant wait that long they will be great for compost!
- For smoothies I added leftover berries to an ice tray, and for tea I dried on a baking sheet and crumbled into a jar for storage.
